YOUR PLASTIC SEA ,2012
Rose-Mari Torpo and Michela Pelusio in collaboration with MEDASSET and the Ministry of Education.
'Your plastic sea' is a fishing net, that could have been left or lost in the ocean by fishermen and catches whatever comes along, a sort of dreamcatcher that pures the environment. Plastic sea is a reference to the emptying of the seas by overfishing, and the large amounts of plastic that are now floating in our seas.
'Your plastic sea' is an installation made of recycled plastic from the beach of Amoudara, Heraklion. The plastic was collected and selected, divided by colours between transparent, white, tonalities of blue and black and attached to the fishing net.
The color composition of plastic pieces being observed from below reflect and filter the light as well as project a moving shadow on the ground. The way the pieces are tied to the net allows them to move freely with the wind creating reflection and sound.
Created at the sea side with the paricipation of 350 children, 'Your plastic sea' has been exhibited in the Loggia Veneziana in Heraklion, at the Art Flights Festival in Rethymno and The Plastic Ocean event in Athens.
credits: MEDASSET for organizing their beach cleaning event, all the children who helped collecting, cleaning the plastic, and attaching it to the net.
