Kaiku / Ekho 2015

Installation

The installation “ Kaiku/ Ekho” consists of the diary entries of the year 2014 displayed in chronological order in the space.

Each diary entry is a reiteration of an oval stencil noted with its date and its colour. I have selected a neutral shape, the oval as a symbolic representation to the day. Like the words in a diary,  the colour given to the oval represents the feeling, emotions, moods, light or colour in the nature of that day. When colouring the oval, I tried to use as less texture as possible so the hues and tonality remain the most important components.

In this project I studied the potential of the colour as a mean of expression and the relations between individual and communal experiencing. Each of us have a very individual way of sensing and feeling about colours. There are no general verified rules related to how we sense colours and for example which colours represent joy or sadness or hope etc..thus this diary is a personal view on the subject. The paper serves as a media to reflect life and to document time. The installation transforms a private diary into public.

My work is a stone installation located by the bird watchtower in Reila, Rihtniemi. I collected stones from the surroundings and near by beach and reorganised them underneath the bird watchtower. The work is a temporary and subtle change in nature. It will be affected and changed by the weather, animals and people. The unique and beautiful state of the location functions as a base as well as inspiration for my work. I have painted and coloured white squares on the stones as well as modelled some new stones from white clay.

Location: N 61 ̊3, 199' E 21 ̊17, 95
Materials: stones, chalk, gouache paint and white clay
